Three-Day Outer Banks Itinerary

Three days is the sweet spot for a first Outer Banks trip: one day on the central beaches, one day south to Hatteras, one day north to the wild horses. Basing centrally keeps each day's drive under an hour each way.

Written and reviewed by Isaiah Burch · Last verified July 2026 · Suggested base: Kill Devil Hills or Nags Head (central, shortest drives both directions)

Day 1 — Settle in on the central beaches

Ease into it and get the first-flight history done early.

  • •Beach morning in Kitty Hawk or Kill Devil Hills
  • •Wright Brothers National Memorial in the afternoon
  • •Jennette's Pier at golden hour, dinner in Nags Head

Day 2 — South to Hatteras Island

The long day. Leave by 8:30am; NC-12 is a two-lane road with no way around a slow truck.

  • •Bodie Island Lighthouse and the marsh boardwalk
  • •Cross the Marc Basnight Bridge over Oregon Inlet, stop at Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge
  • •Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in Buxton — confirm current climbing access before you go
  • •Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum in Hatteras Village (free)
  • •Dinner back north, or in Avon on the way up

Day 3 — North to the wild horses

Corolla and the 4x4 beaches, then a slow last evening.

  • •Morning wild-horse 4x4 tour out of Corolla — book the earliest slot for the best sightings
  • •Currituck Beach Lighthouse climb and lunch in Historic Corolla Village
  • •Beach or sound-side afternoon in Duck
  • •Sunset climb at Jockey's Ridge on the way back

Driving, ferries and timing

  • •Hatteras day: 120 miles round trip from Nags Head, plus stops. Fill the tank before Oregon Inlet.
  • •Wild-horse tours sell out days ahead in July and August.
  • •If a storm is forecast, flip days 2 and 3 — NC-12 floods at the Rodanthe S-curves.
