Five-Day Outer Banks Itinerary for Families
Five days lets you alternate: one beach day, one attraction day, repeat. That rhythm is what keeps younger kids happy, and it leaves room to swap in an indoor plan the day the forecast turns.

Day 1 — Arrive and stock up
Do not plan an attraction on arrival day.
- •Grocery run in Kitty Hawk or Nags Head before checking in
- •Short first beach walk and sunset on the sound side
Day 2 — Full beach day
Lifeguarded access, umbrella, early start.
- •Morning at a lifeguarded beach access near your rental
- •Afternoon rest, then ice cream and mini golf on the beach road
Day 3 — Roanoke Island
The best all-weather day on the itinerary.
- •North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island in the morning
- •Lunch in downtown Manteo
- •Roanoke Island Festival Park or Island Farm in the afternoon
Day 4 — Corolla and the wild horses
The day kids talk about afterward.
- •Morning wild-horse 4x4 tour from Corolla
- •Currituck Beach Lighthouse and the Heritage Park lawn
- •Dinner in Duck, walk the boardwalk at sunset
Day 5 — Pick your finale
Choose based on the weather and everyone's energy.
- •Clear day: Jennette's Pier fishing, hang gliding lessons at Jockey's Ridge, or a scenic helicopter flight from Manteo
- •Wet day: Full Throttle Adrenaline Park, bowling in Nags Head or the Kill Devil Hills cinema
- •Last beach hour and a seafood dinner
Driving, ferries and timing
- •Rentals almost always run Saturday to Saturday, so a five-day trip usually means a Sunday-to-Thursday window at better rates.
- •H2OBX Waterpark is on the mainland approach — do it on arrival or departure day, not mid-week.
- •Build one flexible day: Outer Banks forecasts shift inside 24 hours.
