One Day in the Outer Banks: A Realistic Itinerary
One day means picking a lane. Stay on the central beaches between Kitty Hawk and Nags Head, add Roanoke Island for lunch, and skip Hatteras entirely — the lighthouse is a two-hour round trip from Nags Head before you park.

Morning: first flight and first light
Beat the beach-road traffic, which builds after 9am in summer.
- •Sunrise at Jennette's Pier in Nags Head ($3 walk-on) or a free public beach access on the beach road
- •Breakfast at Sam & Omie's in Nags Head or Duck Donuts in Kitty Hawk
- •Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills — the visitor center, the takeoff line and the climb up Big Kill Devil Hill (about 90 minutes)
Midday: Roanoke Island
Fifteen minutes west over the Washington Baum Bridge, and the whole feel of the trip changes.
- •Lunch on the Manteo waterfront
- •Choose one: the North Carolina Aquarium, Elizabethan Gardens or Fort Raleigh National Historic Site
- •Walk the Shallowbag Bay boardwalk past the Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse replica
Afternoon and evening: dunes and sunset
Back across the bridge for the two best late-day stops on the islands.
- •Climb Jockey's Ridge State Park in Nags Head — free, and the best view on the northern Outer Banks
- •Sunset at the Bodie Island Lighthouse marsh boardwalk, ten minutes south
- •Dinner in Nags Head or on the causeway before heading home
Driving, ferries and timing
- •Total driving: roughly 45 miles, all on US-158, the beach road and US-64.
- •Traffic: the Wright Memorial Bridge backs up badly Saturday mornings (inbound) and Sunday mornings (outbound) in summer.
- •Parking: free at Jockey's Ridge, the Wright Brothers Memorial (with admission) and all marked beach accesses.
